Heading back into it... kind of

source
I didn't realize how many things changed til I came back to it. For example, whenever I read YA literature, I can't help but see the teenagers as kids because that's exactly what they are. Kids who suffer and must overcome their suffering in some way or learn to deal with it like any other character in literature. After all, that's what makes stories, stories.
As mentioned before in a previous post, I'm starting to get back into my old hobbies, writing creatively being one of them. However, throughout the years, the only way I could write creatively is either through being really inspired, it depends on my grade, or if there's a challenge. Since it's summer that challenge happens to be Camp Nanowrimo. It's like the regular National Novel Writing Month challenge in November. However, I didn't realize until this year that you can set your own word count goal or that it was in July. The last time I've done the summer challenge was back when I was in high school, so approximately fours ago.
So in the middle of the night, I've decided to get back into it. I don't have much of a plan, which makes it all the more fun. All I know so far is that it's going to be a bunch of short stories based on a bunch of writing prompts that I've collected throughout the years on tumblr and that it's going to be in this fantasy world that I've created way back when I was a weird/random jr. high schooler. And just saying that makes me feel old.
However, it will be a good way to start writing again. Hopefully, this will help me build more dedication and a motivation to start writing again on my own once the month is over, without any challenges or grades looming over my shoulder.

A more formal introduction to my Nanowrimo 2015 "novel"

Bigger version here
Watercolor texture by So-ghislaine
Skull and rock texture by longlongwaydown
Font is Jenna Sue
Title: collections of me

Short version: A collection of short stories ranging from the supernatural to the contemporary.

Long version: Stories range from the unconventional fairy tale ("Wait, you don't want to be rescued?") all the way down to the one or two sentence stories. There will also be messy splashes of carefully selected au's, such as "Why are you choosing that for a gift to give to your crush?" and "inappropriately timed proposals". As well as, sprinkles of creative writing prompts given out by writing teachers.

Nanowrimo 2015

Wow, Nanowrimo is in seventeen days, and I definitely do not feel very prepared for it at all. Instead of getting an idea in the summer like I usually do, I got an idea right around this month. Last week in fact. And as usual, it came to me through a dream. A dream that involved a cloudy day, a forest, an asexual and aromantic prince, and a gay maiden who’s willingly locked herself up in a tower. It’s a weird fairy tale (if you could even call it that), whose plot I’m still trying to figure out. All I know is that it’s going to involve a lot of talking, with a failed seduction angle.

I’m also going to write other short stories, this year. Not quite as fairy tale-ish as the dream one. But still quite as weird. The other stories are mainly au ideas that I’ve collected on tumblr. Ones that relate with me in some way, like “Is there a reason why you never say my first name?” and “Why does this cost TEN DOLLARS THIS IS AN OUTRAGE”. Some are going to be a few stories that are just writing prompts that my creative writing teacher gave out in class. And a few (or maybe a lot) of short stories that are one or two sentences long. Those ones are inspired by Lydia Davis’s writing style.

Well, I’ve revealed too much about what I’m going to write this year. So, before I spoil anything else, I’m going to hold off on telling you guys what the book title is going to be. As well as, what the book cover looks like. Because I’m still in the process of finalizing it. Even though it seems pretty final right now. But if you really want to know, you can always go to my Nanowrimo page under the username 1018mockingjay.
See ya.

Let's grab some coffee and catch up on all the things we missed, shall we?

Amidst everything that has been going on lately on this blog, suddenly posting again, the New Years posts |x|x|. As well as outside of the blog, homework, and life in general, I forgot to explain the reason why there was a giant break between July and December. And it’s simply because I didn't feel like posting much.

Plus, a lot of things got in my way. Reaching senior year of high school certainly was one of them. With three AP classes, one concurrent enrollment class, a ballroom class, and a few other classes, it required a lot of my attention when it came to homework. Plus there were club meetings that I had to attend during lunch and after school.

And when the beginning of December came two giant projects took up much of my time. The first was the winter dance concert, which required after school dance rehearsals three days before the actual concert. The second was an AP Statistics project, which required a school wide survey and graphs that weren’t easy to make on Microsoft Excel, plus a few other items. And there were college applications to be dealt with. Which got in my way when doing Nanowrimo this year. However I still won with 50,825 words out of 50,000.

Outside of school, there was a bit of family turmoil going on. However, that is now fixed. With a lot of lessons learned along the way. I also found myself occasionally working out, for no particular reason at all. And it was fun, though not enough for me to survive the Hunger Games or a zombie apocalypse. However, in all truth, I don’t think I will ever survive either of those two events.

Also crushes on people who I know will never work out, caught my mind once or twice. But like a match that has been barely lit but quickly blown out by the wind, my crushes on them was gone within the next day or so. That helped me learn a lot about myself though. Like how I might be more asexual than I thought I was. And how I might be a teensy bit interested in girls, making me a bit bi-romantic. As well as a bit more sensual.
Note: I am still trying to figure out what identities fit me, as I change throughout the years. So, don't expect me to stick with one identity just yet.

When winter break came, and the stress of school dwindled down to nothing more but an ever present candlelight in the distance, I found myself doing last minute Christmas shopping with my siblings in tow. This meant getting distracted by pretty clothes, the deliciousness of Godiva chocolate, a candy store that sold foreign candies including green tea kitkats, and getting stuck in a beauty store with annoying salesmen who failed desperately in trying to sell their fancier products to my older sister.

The last minute Christmas shopping wasn’t the only last minute thing we did this year. We finally set up the Christmas tree on December 23, two days before Christmas. We could have done it earlier, but with the stress of tests and homework that school liked to pile onto us before winter break started, it was hard to find time to actually set up the Christmas tree. So it was easier to do it during the break when there was more free time.

And since there was more free time, I found myself making holiday theme popup cards and giving it too everyone this year. That took a lot of time, because glitter glue took a long time to dry. But, with a blow dryer on hand it was easy to speed up the process.

Christmas was a simpler time this year. Not as many gifts. No pictures were taken. And no fancy dinner. Just movies, good food, and peaceful togetherness that was filled with a lot of talking. In honesty, it was one of my favorite Christmases.

Afterwards my siblings and I went to an indoor children’s playground that was filled with a small rock climbing wall, a grocery store with overpriced groceries, a house with a decent library, a farm with cute hens and fat bees, a pipe system, and other various things that was designed to ignite the fiery imagination that every child has. Once that was all over with, came my always favorite part, the trip to Barnes and Noble. Which as usual took forever because I had to choose the perfect books to bring home with me on the budget of a $25 gift card. However, instead of it ending when I finally got the second books to complete my collection of the The Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo and The Raven Cycle series by Maggie Stiefvater. It ended when my brother received his first ever computer programming book. Which has a very small chance of it actually being read.

A few days after that adventure came the trip to the finally finished, renovated aquarium. It involved going into all the different sections the place had to offer. Developing a very short crush on a kind of cute aquarium worker. Seeing the even cuter penguins that either laid on their stomachs, stood around and pretended to be models, swam, or was fed. Learn how ferocious otters can actually be, but still aww as the three otter brothers swam around in their exhibit. Witness a shark feeding that involved an unfair game about sharks between the adults and the kids. Eating a delicious cookie snack at the aquarium café. Watching my older sister be a little kid again as she played in the indoor playground amongst the other little kids. Getting sprayed by water as I watched a movie about the coral reefs, as part of the 4D experience it offered. And crossing a rope bridge to nowhere in particular. And it was an even better trip to the aquarium because it was now bigger and it offered a lot of things that the previous location couldn’t exactly offer.

That part of winter break eventually faded into more movies, and me trying to finish the book One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez. However, I kept on getting distracted by youtube, tumblr, the games dots and two dots, and now blogging. Which means a lot of trouble for me because I am now scrambling to finish the book before tomorrow, as well as finish the rest of my homework. But I will find some miracle to finish on time. Even if it means sacrificing sleep. Which is not unusual for the end of term.

Camp Nanowrimo: A fourth time around?

It is now day two of Camp Nanowrimo. A writing event that is taking place during April and July of this year. It is where you attempt to write 10,000 or more words (depending on what you have set as your word count) on your novel, fanfiction, poetry, script, etc for a full month. And then if you want, you can try writing another 10,000+ words during July. More info, about it can be found here.
This is my fourth attempt at Camp Nanowrimo. The first year it started, I've done it informally, afraid to try my hand at writing fifty thousand words during the summer. Instead what I ended up doing was write about 25 K or so during July. That was surprisingly easy. I tried again during August, only to fail due to the fact that school was starting again.
The next year in August of 2012, I've tried Camp Nanowrimo again. Only this time getting about 35 K written. Again, school was starting and it was distracting me, with all its homework and coursework and such. Which was a pity because I actually liked writing Shh, Silence is Golden. Though, I might continue working on it sometime this year.
Last year in April, I tried Camp Nanowrimo for the third time. This time only attempting 30,000 words. However, there was school and the fact that Eliza didn't particularly interest me. So I only managed to write about seven thousand words. Which seems like a lot, but in truth it isn’t.
As you can see a pattern is starting to show. Whenever, I attempt to write during months which starts with the letter A, I would fail. Just kidding, however, whenever I do attempt to do Camp Nanowrimo, I would most often than not fail on my word count. Simply because school would distract me and I would get bored with whatever it was that I was writing about. Which is bad because you often need passion for whatever it is you’re doing. Whether it’s starting a business to cooking for loved ones.
But back to what I’m talking about. Camp Nanowrimo is not as motivational as Nanowrimo. There are no pep talks, not many interesting special offers, and it's just not the same if it isn’t held in November.
However, there's something about Camp Nanowrimo that keeps me coming back to it over and over again. Maybe it's because it encourages me to continue on writing during the middle-ish of the year. Maybe it's because there's some part of me who misses writing on a deadline. Maybe I just miss Nanowrimo and want to do it again. Maybe it's because I like doing Camp Nanowrimo, despite the fact that I never really finish my word count goals.
Oh well, whatever the reason, I'm back to doing Camp Nanowrimo again this year. This time I'm only writing 10,000 words. Which is the lowest word count goal that I have ever set for myself. And I don’t know if I can accomplish it. To make this even more of a challenge, I’m writing poetry. No, it isn’t going to be like an Ellen Hopkins novel, where it’s a novel written in poetry. Almost all the poems that I am writing will be completely disconnected from each other. In fact, the only thing that will connect them together is the fact that it’s written by me. However, I can’t just make up completely random poems at the top of my head. So I’m using past poem a day prompts from Writer’s Digest to help me. Which are surprisingly fun to do.

An empty hand is wondering where to go.

Current word count as of 11/30/13
All shadows whisper of the sun.
~ Emanuel Carnevali

How to reach fifty thousand words: take a few hours off and write roughly seven thousand words. All the while getting distracted from the nanowrimo forums and avoid tumblr all together during this time. And eat lots of tootsie rolls along the way. However, that only works if you’re me. If you’re someone else than the conditions will most likely not apply and you will probably end up losing or winning. It all depends on how many words you have left to write.
Also, try to not get distracted on day eighteen to yesterday. All because of schoolwork, plain laziness, and a guy with great hair who takes you out on a date to go see the Ender’s Game movie. But, do have the determination and courage to finish your novel. After all there are over a billion stories, but at least one of them is uniquely yours.
And feel sad because nanowrimo is over, but at the same time feel relieved because it’s finally over.

... what would the earth look like if all the shadows disappeared?

Current word count as of 11/9/13

I’m exhilarated at how well I’ve been doing so far in NaNoWriMo. This has actually been my best year out of the three. And as you can tell, I’ve been pretty much over the required word count goal. My characters are very interesting to work with and there have been a few unexpected scenes and plot revelations along the way. And this is coming from a girl who forgot the things she even outlined about till a few days before Nanowrimo started.
I also just wanted to pop by to say that I won’t be posting much. Though you probably noticed that by now. Between schoolwork, writing, and sleep, it will be hard trying to come up with new posts. But, don’t think I am abandoning you. As usual every Wednesday (or technically most Wednesday s) there will be a new lifescouts post. And by Friday, I shall try to come up with another post. Granted, it will most likely be another Nanowrimo post.
Have a great day or night. And if you’re doing Nanowrimo, write!

The Shadow & her Lover (nanowrimo 2013)

Nanowrimo checklist:
Come up with a plot
[x]
Character sketches.
[More or less, I still need to work on it]
Conflict
[Still working on it but I get the basics of it]
Villain who actually has a good reason to be “evil”
[More or less]
Main characters who end up being annoying in a lovable way.
[I don’t know them well enough to know if they’re annoying]
Interesting background stories.
[More or less there]
Everything else?
[I’ll improvise if I need to]
Do I feel ready for it at all?
[…]

How it all started:
I had a dream. It was a riveting dream, one that I had no control over as I was sucked into the world right along with my characters. It lasted a long time. And, once I was done, I didn't want to let it go because a little part of me would be gone, washed away by reality and replaced with other dreams. So doing what any writer should be doing, I wrote it down, determined to turn it into my next nanowrimo novel.
That was from the summer, and it evolved from there. But the basic plot of the dream is still the same. A girl runs off with a guy and avoid getting captured by her mom (who’s also the villain), and then in the end the girl is forced to come back to get back what’s hers. This involves shadows, twins, lies, outer space, books, falling in love, and a past involving piracy.
Not the usual romantic story that involves saving the world, overcoming rivalry, finding out that the other person might die soon because their cancer came back, immortality, or any of the other stuff that you would normally find in romance plots nowadays. Instead, it’s almost a combination of all of them; some elements are tarnished and unrecognizable, while others are polished, eagerly awaiting their turn in the spotlight. The whole book is about falling in love with an alien (literally), which as far as I've seen is rare.

One, Two, Three, Four, and Five

  1. I’m not dead, but I haven’t really been posting much. The main reason for this was because I didn’t really have anything to say.  Homework or tumblr or reading or some other thing would distract me. And when I did find myself having the words to say something on my blog, I usually don’t post it, because it might not appeal to you guys or it’s too private (and probably a bit embarrassing) to say.
  2. Pride and Prejudice (both the book and the movie), The Lizzie Bennet Diaries, and Doctor Who are the main things that I’m fangirling over right now.  And, I’ve just saw the new episode of Doctor Who yesterday on my older sister’s TV (with my brother distracting me here and there) and I’m still a bit confused as to who Clara is. And why she doesn’t have a clue about the last time she and the Doctor met, when they met again on the new episode.
  3. Tomorrow is the first day of Camp Nanowrimo and I have an idea for what I want to do. It will involve writing a web diary from the view of a fifteen about to be sixteen year old girl. She’ll write about her life and her kind-of-weird dreams. If you’re interested in following her, go to her blog at everybodytalksbutme.blogspot.com, where she’ll try to post at least once a week (or if I remember).
  4. I’m participating in the 2013 PAD (poem-a-day) challenge by Writer’s Digest, and I might occasionally post a poem on my writing blog (or here). I’m going to hope that I can survive doing two writing challenges in the same month and still finish both of them.
  5. It’s also currently spring break for me, and so far it involved going to Costco, eating an omelet at the Original Pancake House, and seeing an improv show that deals with stool.
P.S. Have a great Easter to those of you who do celebrate it. However, if you don't celebrate it, than have a good Sunday or Monday (depending on where you are in the world).

NaNoWriMo 2012 is officially over.

Nanowrimo, where you attempt to write fifty thousand words in the month of November. Or if you are on the YWP version, it is when you try to write how many ever words you have set as your word goal. Many writers try, either winning but not completing their novel or they actually do finish writing their novel, while others lost due to some circumstances. But at least they had the guts to do the event because not many people would actually do Nanowrimo.
So, I want to say congrats to all those who actually did the Nanowrimo event. It doesn’t matter if you won or not, because you still had the guts to do it. And not many people do. I am honestly proud of you guys because you now have written a unique plot filled with characters doing normal to crazy things. You spread the magic of words around. And you guys actually had the motivation to do it. It doesn’t matter if you had a small word count or a large one; you still managed to create a story.
And that is what the world needs. Stories have given readers understanding, hope, and/or a place to get away from reality. Without them, than reality will be a boring place to live in.
Have a nice day/night, and don’t forget to keep on writing no matter what.

Nanowrimo 2012

Wow, I can't believe I forgot to mention this in October. And by now, it's the second day of Nanowrimo. Or National Novel Writing Month for the longer version.

For those of you who doesn't know what Nanowrimo is. Here's a quick recap on it.

Nanowrimo: Write 50 thousand words in the month of November.
The website is nanowrimo.org where you can find out more.
And if you're under eighteen and still want to participate but don't want to write 50 thousand words, then there's always the YWP version at ywp.nanowrimo.org. It's nice because you can choose your own word count goal.

It's hard because of life getting in the way (or cleaning the house in my case) and even harder if writer's block decides to visit you. But it's fun because it forces you to write the novel that you've always dreamed of. And, it will get you somewhere in your writing life.

And that's the thirty second speech* for it.

As some of you may know, this is my second year of actually doing the writing challenge. And as some of you may not know, this is my second time to write on my fantasy novel Immortality Doesn't Exist (for more info about the book, look on the my book(s) page of my blog). Only this time, it's a rewrite. Meaning everything is going to be different (kind of).

This time, I'm going to write the full 50 thousand words (maybe more), and hope that school won't get in the way that much. And for the moment, I'm okay, kind of. I still need to write another 1,6667 words for today.

Join, as well, there's still plenty of time to do that. Even on November 30th, though it would be hard to actually write 50 thousand words in a day.

And if you haven't done so already, check out the finally updated Nanowrimo page that's located at the top.

P.S Add me as a friend on either the Nanowrimo and/or YWP site, I'm 1018mockingjay on both.
thirty second speech - Where you tell people what you know about that subject/object/whatever.

Camp Nanowrimo update #1

13439/50000
Status: On track.
Chapter: Five
Character's POV that I'm writing about right now: Echo, Lana, Ethan aka Etho.
Bits and pieces from the story: (They're slightly edited)

While, sweet little Ethan just held me tighter, quietly listening through it all. ~ Echo.
I tilt my head a little bit more, confused. "Gallery? Why would I be going to the gallery?" ~ Lana
Darn, I’m screwed, I think to myself, while I stand up taller awaiting orders. ~ Ethan
.............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

Words they seem to just flow through my fingers these days. Only they come at a slow pace because the internet keeps on distracting me like this picture.

Eventually I freak out because a bit too much time (an hour or two?) passes by, and I've only written a hundred or so words. But as they say during Nanowrimo time, just keep on writing, just keep writing, just keep writing (in tune to the just keep swimming song on Finding Nemo.)

So if you're freaking out about having no words written for Camp Nanowrimo...

Also...

So it's a good thing that my notebook for my Camp Nanowrimo novel is sitting next to me. Despite my kind of messy handwriting, it has proven itself useful so far.

Also words are nice, don't you think? You can say anything you want to say, make whatever you want that disregards the rules of reality, and well do anything you want, and it's yours because you're the one that is writing it.

And if you continue writing it, ignoring the negative parts about it, and finish your first draft. Then you're well on your way towards the middle, which is the editing/rewriting part of it. And then eventually you get through the middle and you are done with it. However, that's not the end because there are certainly more editing to come if you are thinking about publishing it.

And as for me, well I should stop being uncertain about my novel and just write it. I should just let my novel lead me to wherever it should go. After all, the fun novels are best written when you don't have a clue about where it goes.

However, for the moment I would like to finish season two of Doctor Who with my new penguin friend, David. Who is named after the actor that plays the tenth doctor, David Tennant.

I would also like to sleep but I doubt I'll get that soon. So I'll settle for a picture form for the moment.

Have an amazing day/night.

Love,

*Isn't sure what to say really*

Camp Nanowrimo is going really well for me. ^. ^ I'm 14% into novel with a total of about 7115 words. I'm slightly paranoid when it comes to saving my novel though; as well as my laptop, I save my novel to seven other places (skydrive, google docs, my flash drive, and I email it to my four email accounts.) That’s a lot, I know, but as they say better safe than sorry.

I’m also pleased with my main characters; though I’m surprised I have three. Their names are Lana (female), Ethan aka Etho (male), and Echo (female). Normally, I have two but one just popped up I guess. They’re really fun to write with, especially the unexpected one. Though I guess, I should stop talking about my novel or else I might spoil the ending.

So here are songs I’ve been liking lately ~

I like this song because it's not a love song but a song about friendship, and the music video is funny.

This song reminds me of Ethan's love for Echo, which is sweet the more I write the book.

 Have an amazing day~
Love,

Camp Nanowrimo 2012~

Starts today! ^.^
For those of you who don't know what Camp Nanowrimo [National Novel Writing Month] is, it's a writing event where you try to write 50,000 words in a single month. It came from the original NaNoWriMo event that starts in three months aka November.

It's a very nice event that can help shut up your inner editor and let your crazy juices out. In other words, while writing your novel during any kind of Nanowrimo, it's going to be really messy because you've added events that shouldn't be there, all in hopes to raise your word count. However, it's nice because that novel that you've been wanting to write since you were a little kid is already out on paper. Though, the editing process will not be a pleasant job.

So  far, I've written... 60 words for my Camp Nanowrimo novel. And for some odd reason, I'm laughing about that. My biggest distraction so far is the internet especially here and the Nanowrimo sites. Also, I've decided to go with...

Cover made by featherdancer from the YWP nanowrimo forums.
So, thank you everyone for helping me decide my plot. Now, I should get off and complete my goal of 50 K. (though 35 K is just as good as well).

Have an amazing day and if you're particpating in Camp Nanowrimo...
WRITE.

Help!

The August version of Camp NaNoWrimo starts in...

And I don't know what to choose for my plot. So far, I have two ideas, and both are a continuation of short story that I wrote a little while ago.

Idea one: What is being human again like for Prince Adam aka the Beast, from Beauty and the Beast.
You can read the short story on figment, it's titled  Human Again.

Idea two: Is a futuristic story, where people get paid to not talk. It's based off of the quote, silence is golden.
You can read the short story on figment, it's titled  Shh, Silence is Golden

You can go vote for your favorite here by answering this poll or by comment. Either one is fine.

Well, I guess that's it. Have a wonderful day and good luck on your writing adventures if you're a writer. Or good luck in whatever you're doing in life if you're not a writer.
Love,

Script Frenzy

A couple nights ago, while looking at the Nanowrimo front page. My tired mind forced my hand to click the link to the Script Frenzy site. After signing in and updating my profile page, it took me a minute or two think about what I just did. I just got on the Script Frenzy page and updated my profile while a week before I would have not done it. Not log on, explore the site, or actually do the event. But now here I am learning about slug lines, the margins, finding character references, trying to get my plot just right, etc. for an even that I didn’t even want to do a year ago.
A reason why, would probably be I’m writing deprived. Another reason would be that subconsciously I’ve wanted to do it all along. I’ve not really written much now days for some reason. Probably not enough motivation, laziness, and as well as school getting in the way, to actually sit down and write a story. Though that doesn’t excuse the fact that there are bits of stories floating in my head waiting to be written down and kept forever.
So now after what I think is rambling from up above. I have now decided to tell you what you should have already figured out by now. I’m now doing Script Frenzy, after some accidental clicking. My username is still the same 1018mockingjay on both the YWP and adult ones.  So you should friend me, if you want. And… I just realized that I never really explained the objective (or not at all) did I?

Well there I just explained it, or in truth just showed you. Script Frenzy is just where you write one-hundred script pages in thirty days. It’s in the month of April and like November; it also has thirty days, which I already explained. And also on the YWP one, you can choose how many script pages you write. And since this is my first year, I’m going to try for fifty pages on the YWP one. My actual goal is one hundred pages. Which is going to be a bit hard considering that finals is most likely going to happen around that month as well. But I’m willing to try.
